Car Insurance BMW (Car Insurance). is there water in aviation fuel if not why are people worried about ice formation in fuel lines?

is there water in aviation fuel if not why are people worried about ice formation in fuel lines?

ice can form in fuel lines in regular old cars in the winter in places like North Dakota and other northern states in the US. It has to do with condensation of the moisture in the air. That is why in winter, most drivers put a fuel additive in the gas tank to help dispel the water. It surly must happen in aviation since the air is so cold up in the atmosphere. Occasionally you will get some bad fuel in the tanks and it will ruin or can cause engine failure when in the air. Every smart pilot will check each portion of a tank for water before flight their is quite a bit of water in aircraft fuel. Its obviously not a brilliant feature, but too tricky to remove entirely. Several aircraft have been brought down, had flame-outs as a result of this. Even in the steam age days of prop Aircraft it happened. It doesn't get to be a problem if your in warm air, as it freezes out at quite low temperatures. Also it can be separated out if it freezes in the tanks sump. Its when it gets to freeze in the fuel line to the engine and blocks fuel flow; that's the killer. Look at the aircraft landing at Heathrow a couple of years back. Total flame-out on all engines, and they found no cause. It was traced to icing only after everything else had been tried. And the cure was a simple shaving of a couple of mill of the fuel/oil heat exchanger fins. In any partially filled tank, atmospheric moisture will condense out of the air as ambient temperature drops. Even assuming that there is no water in the fuel when it's delivered to the airplane, condensate water will accumulate in the tank. actually the first time I heard about this was when they reformulated gas to winter blend in cars, years ago. And exactly what they siad would happen did occasionally I guess you turn off the Engine, and tmoisture may be in the fuel line, next time you start up, it runs for a bit, and with no warning dies, even if under power. After a few pumps it will fire back up. I cant imagine this scenario in an air plane have the reformulated aviation fuel recently or what? I've flown Navy jets from warm climates to the freezing cold of the Polar Express coming from the North Pole through the Alps into the Med and I never heard of water freezing in the JP. Not once. I'm not saying that this is a contrived issue, but who knows for sure. Mainly due in part to if it freezes, the engine(s) could stop like British Airways flight 38 did in 2008. The frozen fuel inside the pipes, and on the pipes of the FOHE blocked fuel from making its way to the engine. Cutting off the fuel supply=Serious Issues. Jet Fuel, will have some small amounts of water in it. That is one reason planes are refueled in advance to let the water settle to the lowest point in tank, and it can be drained during preflight. Jet-A freezes at -40ºC - Jet-B (JP-4) goes further down to -54ºC - At end of long cruises (12 hours) jet fuel tanks go often near -40ºC - If there is water droplets in jet fuel, they will freeze at 0ºC in tanks - Yes, jet fuels contain anti-icing additives, such as PFA-55MB - PFA-55MB is commercially known as "Prist" - Two different types of fuel (Aviation gasoline and Jet fuel) make for two different answers.

BMW . Mustang 5.0 Liter Gas Tank Information

The Ford 5.0-liter, known as the 302 to the pre-liter enthusiast, V-8 engine was equipped in the Mustang as early as 1965. The 5.0-liter nameplate is commonly associated with the Ford Mustang and was made infamous in vehicles, such as the 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302. During its life span, the engine has had a variety of different-sized gas tanks.
Time Frame
Gas tanks were equipped on every Ford Mustang, including those with the 5.0-liter V-8 engine. Introduced in the 1965 model-year, the 5.0-liter engine was available until the end of the 1995 model-year. The 5.0-liter engine and its gas tank were replaced in 1996 with a newly designed 4.6-liter V-8 engine. The 5.0-liter engine was reintroduced with the 2011 Ford Mustang GT.
Size
In 1988, the 5.0-liter engine was mated to a 15.4 U.S. gallon gas tank. The 15.4-gallon gas tank was used during the remaining years of the 5.0-liter engine in the early 1990s. When the 4.6-liter engine replaced the 5.0-liter version, the 15.4-gallon gas tank size was carried over. With the introduction of the new 5.0-liter model during the 2011 model-year, the gas tank increased to 16 gallons.
Function
The gas tank holds fuel for the 5.0-liter Mustang engine. Fuel is delivered to the engine; depending on the model-year, this can be done electronically and mixed with air to create a spark. The 5.0-liter engine passes the power to a transmission which relays it to the tires which get the Mustang moving.
Effects
The 1988 Ford Mustang GT received an EPA estimated 16 MPG city and 24 MPG highway. This resulted in the Mustang's ability to travel up to 369.6 miles before requiring a refuel. The 2011 5.0-liter engine, when mated to an automatic transmission, received an EPA estimated 25 MPG highway. With its improved mileage and slightly larger gas tank, the 2011 Mustang can travel up to 400 miles on a tank of gas.
Expert Insight
When Jalopnik reviewed the 2011 Ford Mustang GT and praised the return of the 5.0-liter engine, they wrote, "when the 4.6-liter was introduced, the Stang-faithful praised the improved power delivery but moaned over the loss of their favored displacement."

BMW . How to Eliminate Water From a Car Gas Tank

Water can get inside a gas tank in several different ways. Condensation from a partially empty gas tank can cause problems. Sometimes if a tank has sat empty for an extended period of time the gas tank will accumulate water at the bottom. And some gas companies accidentally mix water with gasoline, which can also cause problems. If too much water is inside the gas tank, the engine will not start and the tank may start to rust. Removing the water and giving the tank a thorough cleaning will help the car perform better in the future.
Difficulty:Challenging
Instructions Things You'll Need
Screwdriver
Ratchet set
Wrench
Dish soap
Muriatic acid
Hose
Baking soda
Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK)
Alcohol-proof sealer
3 bottles rubbing alcohol
Cork or rubber plugs

Step by Step :
1
Remove the gas tank from the vehicle using screwdrivers or ratchets depending on how it is connected to your vehicle. Disconnect all fuel lines leading to and from the tank. Empty the tank of all gasoline if there is any inside the tank.
2
Plug all holes but one with cork or rubber plugs. Stand the tank on end bracing with cement blocks or some other method of keeping the tank upright. Pour 1 gallon of muriatic acid inside the tank. Fill the rest of the tank up with water. Allow the tank to sit for three days.
3
Dump the acid out of the tank into a disposable container. Make sure to dispose of chemicals at an approved toxic waste disposable site in your area. Your local municipal dump will have information on where to find a toxic waste dump. Dump a large box of baking soda into the empty tank and fill with water. Allow to sit until it stops bubbling.
4
Empty the baking soda and rinse the tank with water. Empty the water and pour three bottles of rubbing alcohol into the tank. Slosh the alcohol around inside the tank to reach all areas of the tank.
5
Dump the alcohol and pour in 1 quart of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). Slosh it around until it reaches every area of the tank. Dump the MEK into a container that you can take to the toxic waste dump.
6
Pour alcohol-proof sealer inside the tank. Slosh it around so that it can reach all areas of the tank. Allow to dry for about an hour. Slosh around an additional coat on the walls of the tank and allow to dry for an hour. Place a small amount of sealer on the bottom of the tank and allow to dry for 24 hours. Reattach the tank.

On most other vehicles with rear-wheel drive and V-8 engines, the #1 cylinder is up front on the driver's side, with #3, #5, and #7 proceeding toward the rear of the vehicle. Then #2 is up front on the passenger side, with #4, #6, and #8 following. (See Figure 12-6.) V-6 engines are similar to V-8s. The three odd-numbered plugs are on one side, and the three even-numbered plugs are on the other side, with the lowest-numbered plugs usually up near the radiator. Front-wheel drive vehicles with transverse V-type engines have the #1 cylinder up front on the driver's side, with the odd-numbered cylinders proceeding toward the rear, and #2 up front on the passenger side, with the even-numbered cylinders following (see Figures 12-7 and 12-8). No matter what the engine configuration, the #1 spark plug is always the spark plug in your #1 cylinder. . BMW . Is amorall good for new cars interior?

Oldsmobile 98.
*
Firing order Don't confuse cylinder sequence with firing order. Although your engine may have its cylinders in simple numerical sequence, if the cylinders were fired in that order, the engine would rock violently as first the cylinders on one side (or toward the front) fired in rapid succession, and then the other cylinders did likewise. To avoid this, the firing order is carefully arranged to distribute the shock of combustion evenly throughout the engine. The cylinders fire in very swift sequence, and the result is a fairly stable engine. A typical firing order for a Ford V-8 engine (with cylinders #1 to #4 on one side and cylinders #5 to #8 on the other) would be #1, #5, #4, #2, #6, #3, #7, #8. The firing order is printed inside each of the engines shown in Figures 12-2 through 12-8. Trace the path of combustion back and forth throughout each of these engines so you can see how the shock of combustion is distributed to avoid rocking the engine. Remember, the whole thing happens very rapidly. '>art'"' ^eeP'n9 ^our Car m G°°d Condition, System by System Removing the spark plugs

To maintain the proper firing order, each spark-plug wire must go from the proper terminal on your distributor cap to the proper spark plug, so before you remove anything, label each wire with its proper number in the cylinder sequence. To label your wires, place a piece of masking tape or a clothespin on the spark plug wire near the boot that covers the tip of each plug. Put the proper cylinder number on each one. If you also label the boot where each wire enters the distributor cap terminal, you'll never be unsure about hooking things up properly. (Of course, if you make it a habit to remove the wire from only one plug at a time and to put it back before you remove another, you won't ever get into trouble — unless another wire comes off accidentally.) One way to royally confuse yourself and make the relatively simple task of changing spark plugs into a nightmare is to pull all your spark plugs out at one time. To keep your sanity and to avoid turning this job into an all-weekend project, work on one spark plug at a time: Remove it, inspect it, clean it, and, if it's salvageable, gap it. Then replace it — before you move on to the next spark

plug. After you label the wires, follow these steps to remove each spark plug: 1. Gently grasp a spark plug wire by the boot, where it connects to the spark plug. Never yank on the wire itself (you can damage the wiring); just grasp the boot, twist it, and pull it straight out so that you can pull it off the plug. The shiny thing sticking out of the engine block is the terminal of the spark plug. Figure 12-10, later in this chapter, shows you all the parts of a spark plug, including the terminal. 2. Use a nice soft rag or a small paint brush to clean around the area where the spark plug enters the block — or you can blow the dirt away with a soda straw. Doing so keeps loose junk from falling down the hole into the cylinder when the plug is removed. 3. Find your spark plug socket (the big one with the rubber lining) and place it down over the spark plug; exert some pressure while turning it slightly to be sure that it's all the way down. Like everything else in auto repair, don't be afraid to use some strength. But do it in an even, controlled manner. If you bang or jerk things, you can damage them, but you'll never get anywhere if you tippy-toe around.
